How to configure RAID controller and VMware...Help?

$

I have a workstation tower that im using a "proof of concept".

Asus X99 E Motherboard

Intel i7 6800k CPU

64GB Memory

2 1TB SSDs

16GB thumbdrive

3ware 9750 24i-4e RAID Controller

I have installed ESXi 6.7.0 host on the thumbdrive.

Now i would like to use the 2 SSD's on the RAID controller to create a single large 1TB RAID 1 Storage space for the VM's, Datastore's etc <- This is where im having trouble.

I found, what i think is the correct drives for the RAID controller, here:

https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/details?downloadGroup=DT-ESXI67-AVAGO-LSI-MR3-77071100-1OEM&productId=742

I've successfully installed them using Putty. The installation 'seemed' to have worked and restarted the Host. In the Manage > Hardware i can see my 9750 controller show up. (See Capture1.jpg).

But in the Storage menu, i do not see the controller or the 2 SSD's. Im not sure what im missing on how to get this to work properly. This is the first time im attempting to create a RAID on VM Host.

Its also worth mentioning, that when the machine starts up, the controller is recognized, and lists the disks connected to it. However, it does say "3ware BIOS not installed" - Unfortunately im not sure how to get those installed either, when i dont have a typical OS to use.

I've used these cards before and got the BIOS installed etc via windows - but not sure how to do so through console session, or if those 3ware BIOS are necessary at all.

anyone have ides/experience on how to get this working?

thanks,

Mike

Ok, thanks to all, it was helpful. 2 vCPU is enough for me. FT important restriction seems you cant take snapshots with mormoy. But I readed snapshots without memory are still allowed, so backup software must work.......But now I see I have other problems. In documentation this 10Gb NIC is as "suggestion", there arent sayed it refuses to work with 1Gb nic, altough the traffic may still stuck, that I believe. Of course buy more RAM is nothing problem, but I cant do that, my ESXi is in barebon computer, it dont support more ram, it only have 8GB. Also it have only one nic, integrated. As just now I readed FT minimum is 2x physical nic, then I cant set up FT to that ESXi. Of course I have other ESXi-s with more physical nics and more ram, but I just wanted to put this small barebon ESXi into FT. So, seems EMC RecoverPoint should only option for me. vSphere HA is also option, but as I like to use local SSD-s and not networked storage, then HA also not in question.

Same issue here.. same hardware. Are you using jumbo frames?

Yes your controller registered to the pci bus and thats why you see it on the list of all devices or by using lspci but right now you havent installed the right device driver.  If you have a driver the devices are identify by its PCIIDs and will be initialized. If this happends you can see it under Storage Adapters.

I doubt you havent install the right driver because when using a favorite searchengine it shows that this device was supportet around ESX 4.x and maybe in the early 5.x versions.

copiato?

If this is just a proof-of-concept, why are you bothering with a RAID controller to begin with?

You sure seem to like to go to a bunch of trouble to make up for the fact that you don't have an adequate setup to run vSphere with the type of availability you want. My advice:  Spend a few more <currency> and get half-way decent hardware to begin with.

Hi,

My guess would be that you first have to get that 3ware BIOS to load to start with, which by itself might involve things like moving the RAID card to another PCIe slot.

Once you can get into the RAID firmware you can configure the RAID set based on those 2 SSD's.

However I agree with Daphnissov, why bother?

Mucking around with old drivers and wasting time on getting this to work isn't very likely going to be very helpful knowledge to learn.

You can run vSphere as a virtual machine within VMware Workstation and get your handson experience that way.

It is possible to run guests inside the vSphere virtual machine, so you can do a pretty good test that way.

Alternatively you can conntect those SSD's directly to the motherboard and use them as 2 SATA based datastore's.

This line:

auth sufficient pam_sss.so forward_pass

Should be this line:

auth sufficient pam_sss.so use_first_pass

My advice:  Spend a few more <currency> and get half-way decent hardware to begin with.

Its not very possible, as this all is my personal home hardware and software and Im pensioner. I dont earn no any money with it, its just for fun (as pensioner, I still cant stop administration) and I already spend lots of money. But in future, of course, if I can I always buy something new.

If you want to allow users to access files you need another product. That is not a feature of Horizon. You need to have the application (PDF viewer) installed on the RDSH server. You can have the user copy it to a thumbdrive then open it locally but that is a workaround.

I'm having the same problem when attempting to upgrade from 6.0 to vCSA 6.7.0 U1b.

That command only sets the default server that the Horizon client will connect directly to when launched. The server list is saved in the users perfs.txt file in their appdata directory. Servers are added after they connect for the first time to the server.

Have you checked the client logs for any errors?

VMware Knowledge Base

Have you reinstalled the client?

Have you modified the "Access this computer from the network" in GPO. If so you need the connection servers listed.

Worse case: Try a different user account logged into that workstation. If that works then you will probably want to blow away the users profile.

What are you trying to achieve?

The writable volume is specially mounted and merged into the OS. You can view it under c:\snapvolumetemp\MountPoints\GUI\svroot

You can mount it to a desktop w/o the client and browse to the hidden svroot folder as well.

No clue how you ever figured that out, but you just saved my bacon.  I drove 350 miles to configure a new site and had only my macbook pro with USB-C.  I couldn't get the serial adapter to work with Mac or to show up in Windows until your post.  Solved it perfectly!  #Hero

Horizon: QueryService_Create fails

Hi all,

I need your help getting QueryService_Create to work with Horizon 7.

Using PowerCLI  under Windows 7, with the following PS version:

pwsh >  $PSVersionTable

Name                           Value

----                           -----

PSVersion                      5.1.14409.1018

PSEdition                      Desktop

PSCompatibleVersions           {1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0...}

BuildVersion                   10.0.14409.1018

CLRVersion                     4.0.30319.42000

WSManStackVersion              3.0

PSRemotingProtocolVersion      2.3

SerializationVersion           1.1.0.1

The code fails at the last line with this error:

Exception calling "QueryService_Create" with "2" argument(s): "Object reference not set to an instance of an objectException calling "QueryService_Create" with "2" argument(s): "Object reference not set to an instance of an objectAt PowerShell\Horizon_03.ps1:14 char:1

+ $queryResults = $queyService.QueryService_Create($hvServices, $defn)

+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (:) [], MethodInvocationException

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : NullReferenceException

Here is the code (I've already used connect-hvserver successfully before the code):

$queyService = New-Object VMware.Hv.QueryServiceService

$defn = New-Object VMware.Hv.QueryDefinition

$defn.queryEntityType = 'FarmSummaryView'

$queryResults = $queyService.QueryService_Create($hvServices, $defn)   # This is line 14 in the program

The code fragment is verbatim from this example:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
